Understanding KENO: rules, KENO-Typ and fixed odds
KENO is the only daily numbers lottery run by the German Lotto and Toto Block: 20 winning numbers are drawn from a pool of 70 every evening — including Sundays and public holidays. That adds up to roughly 365 draws a year, considerably more than LOTTO 6aus49 or EuroJackpot, which is why the KENO archive on this site is by far the largest of the three.
The decisive difference from LOTTO 6aus49: you decide yourself how many numbers to play. Anything between 2 and 10 is possible — this is the so-called KENO-Typ. The type you choose determines which prize tiers exist for you at all and how high each payout is. A KENO-Typ 10 has different odds and different payouts from a KENO-Typ 4, even though both are decided by the very same draw.
KENO is also a fixed-odds lottery. Unlike the jackpot principle, the prize is set in advance and scales with your stake (1, 2, 5 or 10 euros) — not with how many other players happened to pick the same numbers. A prize is therefore never split here. The higher types 8, 9 and 10 add a further peculiarity: a ticket can win even when not a single one of the numbers played was drawn.
For the statistics on this site that has a concrete consequence: because 20 of 70 balls fall per draw, the hit rate for any individual number is systematically higher than in a 6-from-49 game. Comparing frequency values between KENO and LOTTO 6aus49 is therefore meaningless — only a comparison within the same lottery says anything at all.
